In the current conditions of global exchange and rapid changes, it would seem that such archaic urban spaces, like markets, are supposed to stop existing. Supermarkets and hypermarkets are firmly embedded in the daily routine of the city dweller. But, despite this, the market is still alive and remains a part of the city. So why do cities need markets?

European urban markets experienced the appearance of the first shops in the 15th century, urban policy of the 19th century and the boost of shopping centers of the 20th century. And today, in the age of technology, Internet commerce and social networks remain relevant. What are the reasons for their existence and competitiveness?
Why along with all the global processes is this topic still interesting?
How important are the markets for the development of the city, and how closely do they relate to the urban environment?
How does their location affect their functioning?
And what are the differences between the markets of Barcelona and Paris, London or Chicago?
