Intensive two weeks introduction course for NGO-representatives "ACTION TOOLKIT: WORKING IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT FIELD"
CANactions School training is implemented in the framework of the project Ukraine Confidence Building Initiative (UCBI), funded by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The Advanced Professional Training is designed to broaden the scope of knowledge about up-to-date trends and practices in urban development for the interdisciplinary group of working professionals, engaged in NGO activities in the cities of Eastern Ukraine, as well as to equip them with the tools of implementation of those approaches in their hometowns (data and stakeholder analysis, tactical urban design, methodology of successful practices, effective teamwork, communication etc).
Elena Arkhipovaite is a professional of urban development programs working in the field of urban policy with an emphasis on mediation and supporting participatory planning practices in communities. As a tutor, she works closely with two universities: the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Through various development projects, she collaborates with the United Nations on the UN-Habitat Program, the Uganda Government, the Slum Dwellers International, the Engineers Without Borders (Norway) and many other institutions.
Beneficiaries and participants
The Program is designed for NGO-representatives, actual UCBI partners, who are already involved in urban development projects in Eastern Ukraine cities and established themselves as active and motivated change makers, who want to bring their projects to the qualitatively new level.
The inhabitants of those cities derived advantage from this program, as they are the recipients of the projects, that program alumni initiated.
Also, as training was conducted in several locations for representatives from different cities, it can be perceived as a platform for communication and networking not only between organizations within the region, but also regional NGOs with broader Ukrainian and the world community.
Program schedule and content
The course was conducted in two parts as a full-time interlinked modular system, performed in Kyiv and in Kostyantynivka. The training will be delivered through intensive full-time 6-day sessions.
The course will prepare participants for handling situations in the urban development field by acquiring the ability to reflect on theoretical concepts and use practical tools in the contextual realities of the field they will be exposed to.
Time: 28.02-04.03.2017 Place: Kyiv Focus: Introduction to urban development practice: theory, live examples, approaches
In the first session of the course we were focused on methodological approaches for strategic action and planning in cities; critical issues of globalization, urbanization, poverty, informality and discuss examples of good governance internationally and locally. In this session, we not only had lectures, case presentations and discussions but also we were visited organizations and communities in Kiev area in order to experience and better understand about live-like hoods and communities in an urban context and also we were analyzed and discussed its concepts, frameworks and challenges these communities face. After this session the participants has had a homework task to analyze and later present case from their hometown. Homework task is design in order to try, better understand and have a possibility to apply the given knowledge and experience in their own environment.
Time: 20-25.03.2017 Place: Kostyantynivka Focus: Hands on - developing the design process and managements skills in real case project
The second session of the course is designed as HANDS ON approach. We as a team of 25 people for 6 days will work on real given case in Kostyantynivka, in order to learn and apply the knowledge of the first session in familiar context. While working in the field we will learn and experience methods and tools of community engagement, teamwork and decision making. Furthermore in the field during this session, we will interact with agents and institutions that are connected to the given case. We will not only engage but also analyze and discuss their impact on modes of development in urban context. We conclude this session with reflections that will be based on our field experience by analyzing ethics and social, professional responsibilities we hold as practitioners at the moment and discuss how we could improve our practice in the future working with the similar context of urban development.
